Matthews, NC... Second and third round leader Brent Winston fell
victim to the harsh winds on the back nine of the Jackaroo
Steakhouse and Sauce Classic at Emerald Lake Golf Club and
bogeyed his last three holes to finish in a tie for 4th place. On the
other hand, Tommy Biershenk, Boiling Springs, SC, battled the winds
to perfection and won the $15,000 first place check by one stroke
over Zoran Zorkic, Kingwood, Texas. Biershenk, a Clemson
University graduate, won his first NGA Hooters Tour event in only his
4th start, finishing in second place two weeks ago in Columbia, SC.
"It was really windy out there today, to play well, you had to be
patient," said Biershenk. "My focus was really good on this golf
course, the conditions today made it tough." Bob Heintz, Clearwater,
FL, led the tournament for much of the day, but he too fell apart on the
last three holes, finishing bogey-double bogey-bogey. Zorkic made a
late run on Biershenk but came up one stroke short. He made birdies
on holes 13, 14, and 18.
The NGA Hooters Tour will be off next week before going to Memphis,
Tennessee for the Gold Strike Casino Classic at The Club at North Creek.
