Raeford, NC--- Third round leader Tim Straub withstood a furious
charge by Chad Campbell on the final day to take home the $15,000
first place check and the Hooters Classic at Bayonet title. Straub
entered the day with a one-stroke lead over Vaughn Taylor, but
Campbell was 6 shots back. Campbell used a 9-under par 63 to
catch Straub on the 18th hole, after making a birdie on his final 4
holes. On Straub's end, he knew that he had a 3-stroke lead over
his fellow competitors (Hulsey and Taylor), but he didn't know that
Campbell was that close until he saw the leaderboard on the 18th
green. "I'm glad I didn't know he was that close," sighed Straub.
"If I had known I probably would have choked, but instead I made
4 birdies today to win. This tournament was the best I've ever
played, I only made one bogey and that one was on Thursday."
Straub last win on the NGA Hooters Tour was in 1995, also in
Fayetteville, N.C. but the tournament was held at Gates Four
C.C. Straub entered the event as a sponsor's exemption but now
plans to play more events this year. Campbell finished alone in
2nd place at 20-under par. Kevin Snell, from Eagleville, Tennessee,
finished in 3rd place at 17-under par. Sam Hulsey and Vaughn Taylor
finished tied for 4th place.
Next week event moves to Wilmington, N.C. for the Hooters Classic
at Echo Farms Country Club.
