Long Grove, Iowa...After four players were tied for the lead following
the third round, only one player came away with the $15,000 first place
check at the Lady Luck Casino Classic in Long Grove, Iowa. That player
was Eric Epperson, of Dallas, who fired a final round 3-under par 69 to
win the tournament by a single stroke over Ray Franz and Scott Medlin.
Epperson, who started the day at 9-under par, made birdies at holes 1,
5, 9 and 13. He made only one bogey on hole 17 and that almost proved
to be costly as he had a one stroke lead over Scott Medlin at the time.
"It was so windy out there today I really didn't know where I stood (in
the tournament) " said Epperson, where winds were howling most of the day
well above 30 m.p.h. "What made it tough was the gusty winds, they all
seemed to be right to left or vice-versa. I was hitting close shots to
the flag all day, and that really took the strain of the wind out of me."
However, Medlin, who had a one stroke lead over Epperson for the entire
back nine, failed to finish strong. He made a bogey on the par 5 15th
hole and another one on hole 18. "I used poor club selection on the 18th
hole and just hit too many bad shots on the 15th hole," sighed Medlin,
who finished as a bridesmaid for the 2nd time in as many years.
This was Epperson's first win on the NGA Hooters Tour who played on the
Nike Tour in 1996 and the Asian Tour in 1997-1998. Next week the NGA
Hooters Tour moves to Bardstown, Kentucky for the Hooters Classic at
MayWood Golf Club.
