Southaven, Miss...Mark Wilson, Pewaukee, Wisconsin, led wire-to-wire
and won the Gold Strike Casino Classic at The Club at North Creek in
Southaven, Mississippi. Wilson finished the tournament at 16-under par,
7 shots better than Greg Parker, Old Fort, N.C. "I played solid early in
my round but I wasn't making any putts," said Wilson who earned $15,225
for his victory. "I knew Greg was hanging in there but the birdie on 12
and the eagle on 13 caused me to start looking for the clubhouse.
Wilson, an All-American at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
won last year at the Dick Brooks Honda Classic. Last year he started his
round with a birdie followed by an eagle, and he did the same during round
one this week. "Now I know that anytime I start my round with a birdie
and then an eagle, then something good will come of it. "My short game
was the key to my success this week," continued Wilson. "I chipped in 4
times for birdie and holed out two shots for eagle." Next week the NGA
Hooters Tour will move to Joelton (Nashville), Tennessee for the Harrah's
Casino Classic at Highland Rim Golf Course.
NOTE: PGA Tour star John Daly made a guest appearance during the first
round by caddying for HIS caddy, Brian Alexander. Alexander fired
78-76-154 and missed the cut by 7 shots.
