Smithfield, VA....Tyler Williamson, Decatur, Al., fires a final round
69 to win the Cypress Creek Golf Classic in Smithfield. Williamson,
the leader from the start, lost the lead halfway through the final
round to Scott Sterling, Baton Rouge, LA., but was able to shot 32 on
the homeward half. Sterling, who took the lead with a birdie on nine,
completed his back nine in 39, 3 over par. "It was good for me to lose
the lead halfway through the round because it made my focus even greater,"
commented Williamson.
"I stayed aggressive all week and it has finally paid off for me in my
first tour victory," said Williamson. Williamson garned $20,000 for the
victory. He finished with a total score of 269, 19 under par. His 65 on
Friday was a new course record at Cypress Creek Golfers'Club.
Tim Straub, Huntersville, NC., finished 3 back at 272 and Michael Flynn,
Ft. Worth, TX., finished third at 274. Chad Moseley, Vienna, VA., the
third player in the final pairing, finished at one under par for the
day and a 275 total in a tie for fourth place.
The NGA Tour now moves south next week to Raeford, North Carolina,
and the Samuel Adams Classic to be held at the Bayonet at Puppy Creek.
The tournament gets under way on Thursday, July 13th.
