Decatur, AL......Robert Russell, Joplin, MO., wins the Daikin America, Inc.
Pro Challenge for his first NGA Tour event win. Russell carded a 69, 3 under
par today to win by 5 strokes and finish at 15 under par for four rounds
in Decatur. His previous best finish was 2nd in Mobile, AL., last year.
Russell was never threatened by the rest of the field. "The other guys
in my group got off to a bad start today and never really put any pressure
on me," said Russell, "but my plans were to go out today and play my game
and see where I finished."
Jamie Rogers and Eric Epperson, who stood in second and third place,
respectively, after the third round both made double bogey on the first
hole today. Russell on the other hand played the front nine in 3 under par.
Russell will take home $20,000.00 for the victory.
Chad Moseley, Vienna, VA., finished all alone in second place at 10
under par, 278. Jimmy Reist, Rogersville, AL., Monday qualified and
played as an amateur and finished at 8 under par and in a seven way tie
for fifth. He will receive a $500 gift certificate which is the maximum
amount allowed under the USGA rules for amateur status.
John-Paul Hebert, Houston, TX., carded a 65, 7 under par today to turn
in the low round of the day and one stroke off the course record of 64
set by Garrett Willis in 1996. Mike Tschetter shot 65 in the first round
this week as well.
The NGA Tour will take next week off and will resume action on Thursday,
June 22nd through Sunday, June 25th in Ft. Wayne, Indiana at the
Cobblestone Country Club for the KENDALLVILLE CLASSIC presented by
Shepherd's. The Tour will then have a week off before beginning a four
week stretch which will swing through Virginia, North Carolina, and
South Carolina.
