Raeford, NC....Mark Slawter, Raleigh, NC., shot a bogey free round of 66
to win the Samuel Adams Classic in Raeford, NC. Slawter started the day
one behind third round leader, Chad Campbell, but quickly erased the lead
with birdies at one and two. "I went out today with a game plan and my
caddy and myself said we were not going to dismiss it not matter what went
on," commented Slawter.
Slawter, who played golf at North Carolina State and was an All-American
in 1994, is a champion for the first time on the NGA Tour. He used a
front nine 4 under par, 32 and a back nine 2 under par, 34 to win. "The
difference came with my birdie at fourteen," said Slawter, "it gave me a
big boost." Slawter came to the eighteenth with a two stroke lead and was
able to make par to seal the win. "I knew I was the shorter hitter of the
group so I was comfortable with the 2 shot lead," said Slawter.
Bill Lunde, Hederson, NV., finished in second at 268, 20 under par for
the tournament. Chad Campbell, Andrews, TX., finsished alone in third
at 269, 19 under par. Campbell was looking for his seventh win of the
year on the NGA Tour but will now look forward to another shot next week.
The NGA Tour now heads for Wilmington, NC and the Michelob Light Classic
to be played at The Cape Golf & Racquet Club. The tournament gets under
way on Thursday, July 20th.
